In Black AF History, Michael Harriot presents a more accurate version of American history. It could even be said that the devaluation and erasure of the Black experience is as American as apple pie. ![]() It should come as no surprise that the dominant narrative of American history is blighted with errors and oversights-after all, history books were written by white men with their perspectives at the forefront. It is a sugarcoated legend based on an almost true story. It is the fantastic tale of slaves that spontaneously teleported themselves here with nothing but strong backs and negro spirituals. It is George Washington's cherry tree and Abraham Lincoln's log cabin. It is the story of the pilgrims on the Mayflower building a new nation. America's backstory is a whitewashed mythology implanted in our collective memory. From acclaimed columnist and political commentator Michael Harriot, a searingly smart and bitingly hilarious retelling of American history that corrects the record and showcases the perspectives and experiences of Black Americans. ![]() ![]() ![]() Creon has decreed the burial of Polyneices is against the law. The short play, Antigone, conveys to its readers that civil disobedience is an inherent right of every individual in order to fight unjust laws.Īntigone is faced with a great moral dilemma. Nonetheless, who should decide what role is played by whom? As a result, one could say that civil disobedience plays a dominant role in justice. In other words, each member of society has a role and remains within the constraints of that role without interfering with any other members’ role. Plato deemed justice as establishing rational order in the world. Some believe it means treating everyone the same, while others argue that it means treating each individual differently based upon individual circumstances. Philosophers and law makers have debated about the actual meaning of the term justice for centuries. By definition, the word means right or law according to its Latin roots. One of the most important political and moral terms in the civilized word is justice. Winner of the Costa Book of the Year Award 2008 and shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, I had high hopes for this novel. That’s the awful thing about books – a mediocre one can be saved by a perfect ending and a good one utterly ruined by a terrible one. I should point out immediately that any comments I make about this book are due to my disappointment in its ending. ![]() ![]() ![]() July Mayson doesn’t understand the pull she feels toward the bad boy biker Wes Silver, but she knows being with him is like nothing she’s ever felt before. Only I wish there was more cooking, more time in the kitchen, the butcher’s, the market. Blood, Bones & Butter follows a strange culinary career (it’s subtitled The Inadvertent Education of a Reluctant Chef), complete with drug abuse, theft, and, of course cooking. Much has been made of Hamilton’s writing bona fides (an MFA in fiction writing from University of Michigan), and while she can put a sentence together without relying on the stock phrases and tropes that lard most memoirs these days, that skill wouldn’t really matter if she didn’t have a tale to tell. The memoir-in-food is something of a cliché at this point, but Gabrielle Hamilton’s new book Blood, Bones & Butter came with enough accolades (including a glowing blurb from Anthony Bourdain) and positive early reviews ( like Kakutani’s at The NYT) for me to spend a few hours thumbing through it. ![]() |
